Lightspeed Venture Partners

Lightspeed Venture Partners is a global multi-stage venture firm founded in 2000 and headquartered in Menlo Park, managing more than US$40B (Wikipedia lists US$50B). It operates as a federated set of regionally anchored entities — Lightspeed Management Company across the US, Europe and Israel, and Lightspeed India/SEA separately — with offices spanning Menlo Park, San Francisco, New York, Tel Aviv, London, Paris, Berlin, India and Singapore. Lightspeed began investing in AI in 2012 and says it has since backed 165 AI-native companies with more than US$5.5B committed. In December 2025 it closed more than US$9B across six vehicles — its largest fundraise ever — explicitly structured to fund capital-intensive AI: a US$3.3B Opportunity Fund III for late-stage follow-ons, US$1.8B Select VI, two early-stage funds (US$2.18B combined), a US$600M co-investment vehicle and US$1.25B in single-investor mandates. Its signature AI position is Anthropic — it led the US$3.5B Series E in 2025 and backed Series D and F — and it has written one of the largest reported VC cheques in the sector (~US$1B to Anthropic). It is also Mistral's seed lead and an every-round backer of the European champion.

How Lightspeed is playing the AI cycle

AI as a capital-intensity game, played with segmented funds

Lightspeed's thesis is that AI value concentrates in companies that need sustained, enormous capital for talent, compute and infrastructure — so it raised a record US$9B across vehicles that separate early-stage risk from growth-stage follow-on. Opportunity Fund III (US$3.3B) exists to keep backing winners from Series C through E+ instead of losing them to later-stage funds.

From the first cheque to the largest cheque

The firm prides itself on staying with founders from Seed to Series F and beyond. Its Anthropic arc is the clearest example: engagement before public product, Series D in early 2024, leading the US$3.5B Series E in 2025, Series F — then seeking ~US$600M more via a Project Mercury continuation vehicle (2026) to extend ownership of OpenAI and four other assets while adding fresh Anthropic exposure.

Depth over breadth, regionally anchored

Rather than a single global platform, Lightspeed runs local-first partnerships (US/EU/Israel as LSVP; India/SEA as LSIP) that act as 'first investor and early backer' in each region — a structure that lets it be the seed lead for Mistral in Paris and a growth lead for Indian and Israeli AI companies at the same time.

Applications and foundations both

Its portfolio spans frontier labs (Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI, Mistral, Reflection AI), infrastructure and data (Databricks, Glean), and vertical applications (Abridge, Skild AI, Verkada, Rippling) — with consumer, healthcare and fintech teams realigned around AI-native opportunities.
