From Meta and DeepMind to Europe's AI champion
The three founders — Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix — left senior research roles at Google DeepMind and Meta AI to start Mistral in May 2023, and raised a €105M seed within a month. A €385M Series A from a16z followed in December 2023, on the same day Mistral shipped Mixtral 8x7B and opened its commercial platform. By mid-2024 the company had passed €1B total raised. Reuters and Bloomberg now describe Mistral as Europe's only credible rival to OpenAI and Anthropic, even though it remains dwarfed by them: OpenAI (~$852B) and Anthropic (~$965B) are each valued roughly 35–40× higher and are both preparing public listings.
