Safe Superintelligence (SSI)

The 'straight-shot' safety lab that raised US$8B before shipping a product

Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI) is an Israeli-American AI company founded in June 2024 by Ilya Sutskever (OpenAI's former chief scientist), Daniel Gross (former head of Apple's AI efforts) and Daniel Levy, operating from Palo Alto and Tel Aviv. It calls itself the world's 'first straight-shot SSI lab' — no products, no commercial roadmap, only the goal of safely building superintelligence, insulated from short-term commercial pressure. Despite shipping nothing, it raised US$1B at a US$5B valuation (September 2024), US$2B at US$32B (April 2025, led by Greenoaks with Alphabet and Nvidia joining) and a US$5B Nvidia strategic investment (July 2026) that scaled its compute 'by an order of magnitude' — roughly US$8B cumulative at a ~US$32B valuation with no revenue. Sutskever took over as CEO when co-founder Daniel Gross left in July 2025; Daniel Levy became president.

The story behind the numbers

The most valuable nothing in AI

SSI's funding history is a pure bet on people and mission: ~US$8B raised with no product, no revenue and (at the last equity round) about twenty employees. The valuation — US$5B at three months old, US$32B at ten months — prices Sutskever's track record (GPT-era OpenAI) and the credibility of a lab with no commercial distractions.

A deliberate anti-product structure

SSI's charter rejects product cycles and management overhead by design: one mission (safe superintelligence), one team, research insulated from commercial pressure. That structure is precisely what lets investors value it on mission rather than milestones — and what makes each round a referendum on Sutskever himself.

Leadership turbulence without a product hit

In July 2025 co-founder and CEO Daniel Gross departed (amid reports Meta tried to acquire the whole company), with Sutskever stepping into the CEO role and Levy becoming president. The transition occurred without any product or revenue event — the company's value stayed pinned to its founding team's reputation.

Compute as the real currency

Like every frontier lab, SSI's capital is really compute: the 2024 round funded capacity and talent, Alphabet/Nvidia joined the 2025 round while Google Cloud supplied TPUs, and the 2026 Nvidia deal (Vera Rubin supply + US$5B) scaled compute by an order of magnitude. Each round trades equity for the hardware needed to eventually train a superintelligent system.
