Anthropic

The safety-first frontier lab that out-raised and out-valued every private company on earth

Anthropic is the San Francisco frontier AI lab behind the Claude model family, founded in 2021 by Dario Amodei and colleagues who left OpenAI over safety strategy. It pairs an AI-safety mission with the most aggressive capital accumulation in private-market history: a US$124M Series A (May 2021), US$580M Series B led by Alameda/FTX (April 2022), hyperscaler commitments from Google (~US$43B cumulative by 2026) and Amazon (US$8B), and a pricing ladder from Series E US$3.5B at US$61.5B (March 2025) to Series F US$13B at US$183B (September 2025), Series G US$30B at US$380B (February 2026) and Series H US$65B at US$965B (May 2026) — briefly the most valuable private company on earth. ARR reached ~US$47B by May 2026 with 500+ customers each spending over US$1M annually. A confidential S-1 was filed June 2026.

The story behind the numbers

Built on an OpenAI split

Dario and Daniela Amodei left OpenAI in 2021 with a group of researchers over disagreements on safety and commercialization, founding Anthropic around the principle of 'Constitutional AI' — models steered by principles rather than pure RLHF. The founding team's credibility produced a US$124M Series A within two months and a US$580M Series B led by FTX's Alameda Research the following year, a stake the FTX estate later sold at auction.

Two hyperscalers, not one

Unlike most frontier labs, Anthropic holds strategic commitments from both Google (~US$43B cumulative by 2026, with a US$10B immediate tranche announced April 2026) and Amazon (US$8B), pairing Google Cloud TPUs and Amazon Trainium/Inferentia compute with massive cloud credits. The dual structure keeps leverage over any single cloud provider and lets Anthropic auction compute across suppliers.

The fifteen-month valuation ladder

The defining fact of Anthropic's financing history is its pace: US$61.5B (March 2025) → US$183B (September 2025) → US$380B (February 2026) → US$965B (May 2026), a ~16x expansion in fifteen months. Each round roughly doubled or tripled the previous post-money, and Series H's US$965B briefly surpassed OpenAI (US$852B) and SpaceX to make Anthropic the most valuable private company in the world.

Revenue to back the valuation

By May 2026 Anthropic reported ~US$47B annualized revenue with 500+ customers each spending over US$1M a year — enterprise penetration (Claude in law, finance, healthcare and code) rather than consumer scale is the revenue engine behind the round sizes.

The IPO staging ground

Anthropic confidentially filed its S-1 in June 2026 at a US$965B valuation. The Series H syndicate — growth funds plus Samsung/SK Hynix/Micron — positions the company for a public debut that would test whether the most valuable private company on earth can hold its multiple in public markets.
