Harvey

The legal-AI leader that went from law-firm copilot to most valuable company in legal AI

Harvey is the San Francisco-based AI platform for legal and professional services, founded in 2022 by former securities litigator Winston Weinberg and DeepMind/Google Brain alum Gabriel Pereyra. It built an AI 'copilot' for lawyers on top of frontier models, then began training its own legal-specific models — launching its first open-weight legal model, Harvey Tenet (built from Moonshot's Kimi K3 base), in 2026. Its funding arc tracks the legal-AI category: ~US$5M seed backed by OpenAI (2022), a US$21M Series A led by Sequoia (2023), US$80M at US$715M (late 2023), US$100M at US$1.5B led by GV (July 2024), a US$300M round at US$5B (mid-2025), US$200M at US$11B led by GIC/Sequoia/Kleiner Perkins (March 2026), and — announced 9 September 2026 — a US$550M round at ~US$15.6B co-led by Lightspeed and the new firm Diffusion, alongside the acquisition of AI-agent-security startup Guardrails AI (its fourth acquisition of the year). Harvey has now raised more than US$1.5B, making it the most valuable and best-funded company in legal AI.

The story behind the numbers

From roommate demo to legal AI's biggest company

Pereyra showed Weinberg OpenAI's GPT-3 and Weinberg — a former O'Melveny & Myers securities litigator — realized it could transform legal workflows. The two launched Harvey in 2022, and the startup became the category's defining vendor: by September 2026 it counted ~80% of top US law firms as customers, and its valuation has risen from US$11B (March) to US$15.6B (September), a 42% jump in six months with revenue roughly doubling over the same period.

Own the model, own the category

Harvey's 2026 strategy shift is toward its own models: weeks before the September round it launched Harvey Tenet, its first post-trained open-weight legal model (based on Moonshot's Kimi K3), trained specifically for legal tasks. The US$550M round is earmarked for model talent and compute — moving beyond building on top of OpenAI/Anthropic models.

Four acquisitions and a platform play

The Guardrails AI deal (agent-security testing, co-founders Shreya Rajpal and Zayd Simjee joining Harvey's product org) is Harvey's fourth acquisition of 2026. Founder Weinberg says more are likely, treating deals largely as acqui-hires for strong teams — a consolidation pattern that matches Lightspeed's view that legal is the second-largest addressable AI market after code.

A valuation justified by market size

Lightspeed estimates legal is the second-largest addressable AI market, and that market argument underpins the ~US$15.6B valuation. With >US$1.5B raised, Harvey is simultaneously the most valuable and best-funded company in legal AI — the reference point against which every legal-AI competitor (Legora, Robin AI, Spellbook, etc.) is now measured.
