Source · cursor.com ↗Anysphere is the company behind Cursor. Its founding team worked on how AI assistance could be built directly into a code editor. The founding team included Michael Truell, Sualeh Asif, Arvid Lunnemark, and Aman Sanger.
Cursor began with an editor that embedded AI in day-to-day coding. The acquisitions of Supermaven and Continue brought in teams behind a completion product and an open-source coding assistant, both close to the interaction between a developer and a repository.
Cursor and Cognition’s Windsurf compete for the editor where a developer works directly. Cognition also offers Devin for assignments delegated to a software-engineering agent, so the overlap in editors is narrower than the overlap in coding tools as a whole.
