Claude’s product footprint expanded from a general assistant and API into tools for particular tasks. Claude Code brought the model into software repositories, while the Messages API gave teams a route to build their own integrations rather than adopting a finished interface.
Claude for Work brings a general assistant into company workflows, with administrators controlling access to features such as web search. Cohere’s North combines workplace search and agent workflows with deployment options that include a private cloud or on-premises environment. The infrastructure boundary matters when comparing both tools for employees handling sensitive information.
Compute, not cash, is the binding constraint: pairing Google Cloud TPUs with Amazon Trainium lets Anthropic play two suppliers against each other rather than queue behind one roadmap. The split is deliberately asymmetric — about US$43B cumulative from Google versus Amazon's US$8B; OpenAI spans the same dependence with three backers (Microsoft since 2019, SoftBank, Amazon only from 2026).
Each rung roughly doubled or tripled the last — US$61.5B to US$183B to US$380B to US$965B, about 16x in fifteen months — and the pace is the point. OpenAI's comparable step, US$157B to US$852B, was a ~5.4x move that took seventeen months; Anthropic compressed a larger repricing into less time, with ~US$47B annualized revenue underwriting the top rung.
Timing: in April 2022 a safety-framed frontier lab had almost no institutional bid, and Alameda supplied roughly US$500M — about 86% — of the US$580M round. When FTX collapsed that November, the estate sold the stake at auction to repay creditors, dispersing it rather than reverting it. The round is the outlier in the ledger: every other lead was a VC, hyperscaler, sovereign fund or asset manager.
Because the round doubled as supply-chain positioning: memory makers took equity in one of the largest buyers of their HBM and NAND. The pattern repeats across the dataset — Samsung appears in this Series H and then led Mistral's ~€3B Series D; Nvidia and AMD sit in xAI's Series B and World Labs' cap table alike. Hardware vendors are buying seats at their best customers.
Weeks: OpenAI's US$852B (March 2026) sat below the US$965B Series H, which is what 'briefly ahead of OpenAI and SpaceX' means — then SpaceX absorbed xAI and listed in June 2026, with the combined entity trading near US$1.75T, public-market scale the private mark never faced. Anthropic's June 2026 S-1 filing is the attempt to convert the private crown into a public one.
No. Equity financing, compute purchasing and distribution agreements are different relationships. When reading Anthropic's cloud-linked rounds, check which relationship the announcement describes. An investor's name alone does not establish workload exclusivity or the value of a cloud contract.
