The 2024 agreement gave Google a non-exclusive license to Character.AI model technology and brought the founders back to Google. For the companion product, it separated an ongoing consumer service from the founders who had led the original model effort.
Character.AI lets users interact with different characters and has added group conversations and voice calls. Replika is built around an ongoing relationship with a personal companion. The difference is whether someone wants to explore multiple roles and scenarios or return to the same companion.
